19:00

Join artists Uma Breakdown and Evelyn Wh-ell as they play through Porpentine Charity Heartscape’s game ‘With Those We Love Alive’ (2014), whilst discussing confinement and character, traps and trappings, death and escape, agency and incapacity, and the difficulty of having a body together. The audience is invited to participate in moments of facilitated game play, and join the discussion towards the end of the event.

This session has been organised by artist and A/WA member Evelyn Wh-ell. The session is free to attend and will be held on Zoom. Please register by emailing info (at) artworkassociation.org. Registered attendees will receive the link 10 minutes in advance of the discussion.

Uma Breakdown
I’m Uma, a disabled artist, writer, and award winning game designer interested in animals, horror, queer feminist literature, and games design. Everything I make is about some combination of love, grief, hallucination, and an excess of joy. With Sammy Paloma I make video games about the divine and occult providence of transfemme existence.

Recent projects include ‘The Speculative Dismemberment of Agent Leon Kennedy’ for Market Gallery (Glasgow, 2022), ‘Take The Moonlight by The Tail’ for Arebyte Gallery (London, 2021), and my first solo exhibition ‘Earth A.D.’ co-commissioned by and touring across Wysing Arts Centre (Cambridge, 2022), FACT (Liverpool, 2023), and Quad (Derby, 2024) .

Evelyn Wh-ell is an artist, writer and researcher whose work explores the traps and trappings of trans identity in and through narrative. They are interested in plot holes, bad detective fiction, parody and cheap cinematic tricks.

Their first monograph, Memoirs of a Child Plot Hole: How to Escape Yourself Without Even Trying was published in 2022 by Sticky Fingers Publishing. Recent projects include ‘Enter the Hole: Yes/No?’ at Residency 11:11 (London, 2022) and an upcoming residency at Rupert (Lithuania, 2023). They are also a 2022-2024 Research Associate at CCA Derry~Londonderry.
